Most people only encounter sumo wrestling through short clips or travel experiences in Japan. This spring, Calgary will host a rare opportunity to see professional sumo live.
On March 13 and 14, the Nutrien Western Event Centre will host Sumo Fest 2026, Canada’s first-ever sumo wrestling festival. The two-day event brings professional sumo athletes to Calgary, along with a Japanese cultural market designed to be explored before, during, and between matches.
Sumo is a highly structured sport with deep cultural roots. Matches follow strict rituals and traditions that have remained largely unchanged for centuries, which is why the sport tends to make more sense when experienced in person rather than on a screen.
Sumo Fest is designed as more than a seated sporting event. Live bouts will take place inside a traditionally inspired ring, while the surrounding venue will feature Japanese-inspired food and drink vendors, cultural displays, and interactive programming. Guests are encouraged to arrive early and spend time engaging with the broader experience, not just the matches themselves.
The programming varies across the two days. Evening sessions are geared toward adults looking for a social night out, while Saturday’s daytime programming is family-friendly and slower-paced, with more time to explore the cultural elements of the festival.
A portion of ticket proceeds will support the Calgary Japanese Community Association and its ongoing cultural programming.
Tickets start at $32. Sumo Fest 2026 runs March 13 and 14 at the Nutrien Western Event Centre. More information and tickets are available at sumofest.com.
