January in Calgary gets a bad rap, but honestly? It is one of the best months to get out and do something interesting. The crowds thin out, the city leans into arts and culture, and suddenly there are world-class shows, festivals, and winter events everywhere you look.
If you are ready to leave the couch and do something that actually feels worth it, these are the best things happening in and around Calgary this January.
High Performance Rodeo (January 13 to 31)
If you only pick one thing to do this month, make it High Performance Rodeo.
This is Calgary’s biggest and boldest arts festival, and it shows. For nearly three weeks, stages across the city light up with theatre, comedy, music, cabaret, and performances that are funny, strange, emotional, and sometimes a little unexpected in the best way.
You do not need to be a theatre expert to enjoy it. Part of the magic is discovering something you did not even know you would like. It is creative, local, and deeply Calgary.
Location: Multiple venues
Dates: January 13 to 31
Moulin Rouge! The Musical (January 6 to 11)
This one is pure spectacle.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical brings all the drama, romance, and big energy of Broadway to the Jubilee. Expect stunning costumes, huge musical numbers, and a production that feels like a full night out from start to finish.
If you have been waiting for an excuse to dress up and make a proper evening of it, this is it.
Location: Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium
Dates: January 6 to 11
Banff SnowDays and Skijoring (January 17 to 18)
If you are up for a short winter road trip, Banff SnowDays is absolutely worth it.
The main event is skijoring, where skiers are pulled down Banff Avenue by horses at full speed. It is loud, fast, and completely surreal in the best way. Think western tradition meets winter sport with a crowd that is fully into it.
SnowDays also brings pop-up events, outdoor programming, and a great excuse to spend the day wandering Banff in peak winter mode.
Location: Banff Avenue
Dates: January 17 to 18
Cost: Free
Bob-Sled Music Festival (January 21 to 24)
Bob-Sled is one of those festivals that feels very Calgary in the best way.
It brings together indie and alternative artists for a few nights of live music across local venues. The vibe is relaxed, the crowds are into it, and it is the kind of event where you end up discovering a band you did not know you loved.
Perfect for a low-key night out that still feels fun and social.
Location: The Palomino
Dates: January 21 to 24
Miss Rita’s Lucha VaVOOM (January 24)
This is not a sit-quietly-in-your-seat kind of show.
Lucha VaVOOM is a wild mix of wrestling, burlesque, dance, and theatrical chaos. It is loud, flashy, dramatic, and completely over the top in the most entertaining way possible.
If you want a night that feels different from the usual dinner and drinks routine, this is the one.
Location: WinSport Event Centre
Date: January 24
Alberta Ballet Winter Gala (January 17)
The Alberta Ballet Winter Gala is one of the most elegant events on the January calendar.
It brings together professional dancers and rising stars for a beautifully curated evening of classical and contemporary ballet. Even if ballet is not usually your thing, this is a great introduction and an easy way to experience something refined without feeling formal or stuffy.
Location: Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium
Date: January 17
Monstress at Vertigo Theatre (January 17 to February 15)
If you like your theatre dark, tense, and a little unsettling, Monstress is worth your time.
This psychological thriller is performed in an intimate setting and leans heavily into atmosphere and storytelling. It is the kind of show that keeps you thinking about it long after you leave the theatre.
Location: Vertigo Theatre
Dates: January 17 to February 15
Men Without Hats Live (January 20)
Yes, that Men Without Hats.
The band behind Safety Dance is bringing their high-energy live show to Calgary for a night of pure nostalgia and fun. Expect a crowd that knows every word and a performance that does not take itself too seriously.
It is a great option if you want something upbeat and easygoing in the middle of the week.
Location: Bella Concert Hall
Date: January 20
Chinook Blast at Eau Claire (January 30 to February 16)
Chinook Blast is one of Calgary’s best winter traditions and one of the easiest ways to enjoy the city in January and February.
Centered around Eau Claire Plaza, the festival features large-scale light installations, interactive art, skating, live music, and outdoor performances. It is designed to be explored casually, whether you stop by for a quick walk or spend the evening wandering through the displays.
Best of all, it is completely free and runs for multiple weeks.
Location: Eau Claire Plaza
Dates: January 30 to February 16
