Calgary’s waffle scene just got a major upgrade, and this one comes with a story that’s every bit as heartwarming as it is delicious.
After winning over locals and visitors in Jasper, Wafflato has officially opened its first Calgary location at 1002 9 Street SW. The new café and bar takes over the former Donna Mac space, serving handcrafted Belgian waffles, brunch, coffee, and cocktails all under one roof.
A Story of Resilience
Owners Pravila and Suhas Sawant built Wafflato in Jasper back in 2020, opening their doors just as pandemic restrictions hit. Despite the rocky start, the café quickly became a favourite for its friendly vibe and beautifully presented waffles.
Then in the summer of 2024, the Sawant family faced another challenge when wildfires tore through Jasper. They were forced to evacuate their home and three restaurants, spending weeks in Edmonton unsure what they would return to. When they were finally allowed back, they found heavy smoke damage, spoiled food, and months of cleanup ahead.
Instead of walking away, they rebuilt. Wafflato reopened in Jasper after extensive repairs and offered community discounts to help locals recover. That same spirit of perseverance is what inspired them to expand to Calgary and start a new chapter.

From Morning Coffee to Evening Cocktails
The Calgary café brings mountain warmth to the city with a modern twist. Guests can expect Wafflato’s signature golden Belgian waffles with both sweet and savoury toppings. Favourites include Strawberry Delight, Lotus Biscoff, Rocky Road, and Fried Chicken with Hot Honey.
The all-day menu goes beyond waffles, offering brunch staples like Avocado Toast, Eggs Benedict, and Steak and Eggs, as well as lunch and dinner options such as Truffle Parm Fries, Chicken Pesto Sandwiches, and an Alberta Wagyu Waffle Burger.
Coffee lovers will find a full espresso bar featuring Fratello Coffee Roasters, while those staying later in the day can enjoy craft cocktails like the Citrus-Berry Waffletini, Maple Bacon Old Fashioned, or a Peanut Butter Espresso boozy milkshake.

Inside, Wafflato Café & Lounge blends cozy mountain charm with downtown Calgary style. The space is bright and welcoming, with an open kitchen and plenty of seating for breakfast, brunch, dessert, or a late-night drink.
For the Sawant family, this opening represents much more than a new business. It’s a symbol of hope, resilience, and the community spirit that carried them through a year of uncertainty.
