Think running with the bulls only happens in Spain? Turns out you can do it just 45 minutes from Calgary.
Every summer, the Strathmore Stampede hosts what it bills as Canada’s original Running with the Bulls, where participants race down a fenced course as bulls are released behind them. Whether you’re brave enough to sign up or you’d rather watch from the grandstands, it’s easily one of the most unique events happening in Alberta this summer.
The Main Event
Running with the Bulls has been part of the Strathmore Stampede since 2003 and has become one of the weekend’s biggest crowd draws.
Each day, up to 70 participants take on three rounds inside the arena, with judges and fans choosing the most daring, entertaining and crowd-pleasing runner. The winner walks away with a $1,000 cash prize, a custom belt buckle and some well-earned bragging rights.
Anyone 18 or older can register to participate, with limited spots available each day.

Make a Day of It
Even if you’re keeping a safe distance from the bulls, there’s plenty of reason to make the drive east.
The Strathmore Stampede features one of Canada’s largest professional rodeos, with bull riding, saddle bronc, barrel racing, steer wrestling and more, alongside the thunder of WPCA chuckwagon racing.
On Friday night, American Idol winner Chayce Beckham takes the stage to kick off the weekend with a live country concert.
Beyond the arena, you’ll find a Western Market filled with local vendors, midway food, and Heritage Towne, where families can enjoy pony rides, a petting zoo, dog demonstrations, RC racing, games and even a mechanical bull.
Whether you’re looking for a summer road trip, a classic Alberta rodeo or simply want to watch people do something you definitely wouldn’t, the Strathmore Stampede packs plenty into one weekend just outside Calgary.
