Canada Day in Calgary means free concerts, fireworks, pancake breakfasts and one of the best days to get out and explore the city.

Whether you’re planning a day downtown, celebrating with the kids or looking for a rooftop patio before the fireworks, here’s our guide to the best things to do on Canada Day in Calgary this year.

1. Spend the Day at Prince’s Island Park

If you’re only choosing one downtown celebration, we’d start here.

Prince’s Island Park is home to Calgary’s Canada Day Main Stage, featuring an all-Canadian lineup of Michela Sheedy, Micah Sage, Jamie Fine, Kardinal Offishall, Tia Wood and headliners Walk Off the Earth.

Bring a blanket, grab something to eat from one of the food vendors and spend the afternoon by the Bow River before the evening festivities begin.

When: 2 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

2. Experience the Indigenous Spotlight & Powwow

One of the highlights of the day is the Indigenous Spotlight and Powwow at The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland.

Alongside traditional dancing and drumming, you’ll find Indigenous artisans, teaching tipis, walking tours, family activities and free admission to the Cultural Centre.

If you’re only adding one cultural experience to your day, we’d make it this one.

When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

3. Watch the Canada Day Fireworks

Canada Day wraps up with one of Calgary’s biggest fireworks displays.

Fireworks launch from Stampede Park at approximately 11 p.m.

Because Stampede preparations are already underway, the grounds won’t be open for viewing this year. The City recommends watching from Max Bell Centre, with nearby CTrain stations making transit one of the easiest ways to get there.

4. Catch Free Live Music

Canada Day is packed with live music.

The biggest free show is at Prince’s Island Park, but it’s not the only place to catch a performance.

Studio Bell and the King Eddy are also celebrating Canada Day with live music and special programming throughout the day as part of the National Music Centre’s 10th anniversary.

5. Step Back in Time at Heritage Park

Heritage Park is always one of our favourite family-friendly Canada Day celebrations.

Watch the Canada Day parade wind through the Historical Village before spending the afternoon exploring vintage vehicles, historical reenactors, live entertainment, Indigenous performances, trick roping and hands-on activities throughout the park.

If you’re celebrating with kids, it’s hard to beat.

Admission required.

6. See Brett Kissel at Spruce Meadows

Country fans should make the trip south.

Spruce Meadows is celebrating Canada Day with family activities, shopping, food vendors and a live indoor concert by Canadian country star Brett Kissel.

It’s an easy way to turn Canada Day into a full-day outing.

7. Celebrate Canadian Music at Studio Bell

If music is more your thing than midway rides or fireworks, Studio Bell is worth adding to your plans.

The National Music Centre is celebrating its 10th anniversary with live performances, family activities and interactive exhibits, while neighbouring King Eddy continues the celebrations into the evening.

8. Explore East Village

If you’re already spending the day downtown, don’t miss the East Village Street Fair.

One of Calgary’s biggest Canada Day events, the annual street fair transforms East Village into a lively pedestrian festival with more than 70 local vendors, food trucks, live music, family-friendly activities, a Pup Plaza for four-legged visitors and the popular 5th Street Square Beer Garden.

It’s also just a short walk from The Confluence, Studio Bell and the RiverWalk, making it an easy stop as you explore downtown throughout the day.

When: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Beer Garden until 10 p.m.)

9. Wander Through Eau Claire Plaza

Eau Claire Plaza will be buzzing with live entertainment, food vendors, dance performances, face painting and activities for kids.

If you’re already spending the day downtown, it’s an easy addition to your route.

10. Celebrate Calgary’s Cultural Communities

Head to the Municipal Building and neighbouring Sien Lok Park for dragon dances, lion dances, cultural performances, fashion shows and interactive activities celebrating Calgary’s diverse communities.

It’s one of the most colourful stops on this year’s Canada Day celebrations.

11. Visit the Calgary Zoo

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is marking Canada Day with special animal enrichments in Wild Canada and maple-inspired treats throughout the park.

If you’ve got a membership, this is a great excuse for a visit.

12. Escape Downtown

Not everyone wants to celebrate Canada Day in the middle of downtown.

If you’re looking for a change of pace, there are plenty of great options just outside the core. Granary Road is hosting a full day of family fun, Calaway Park is celebrating with rides and Canada Day activities, and Spruce Meadows combines shopping, entertainment and a live Brett Kissel concert into an easy day trip.

Sometimes skipping the downtown crowds is the best plan.

13. Start the Morning with Pancakes

It wouldn’t be Canada Day without pancakes.

You’ll find community breakfasts happening across Calgary, but one of the biggest takes place at The Saskatoon Farm, where pancakes are just the start of a full day of family-friendly fun.

Before heading downtown, it’s also worth checking what’s happening in your own neighbourhood. Community associations across Calgary often host free pancake breakfasts on Canada Day morning.

14. Celebrate on a Rooftop

If you’re celebrating with friends instead of the family, Calgary has no shortage of Canada Day parties.

Modern Steak is teaming up with 98.5 Virgin Radio for a rooftop day party on Stephen Avenue featuring Fuzzy and DJ Kav, brunch specials and skyline views from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Meanwhile, BLEU Rooftop Bar & Day Club is bringing back its annual Canada Day Block Party with DJs, free RSVP entry (capacity permitting), a complimentary BBQ for the first 200 guests and rooftop views over downtown before the evening fireworks.

There are plenty of patios and rooftop celebrations happening across Calgary, making it easy to celebrate before the fireworks light up the sky later that night.

15. Build Your Own Perfect Canada Day

One of the best things about Canada Day in Calgary is that there’s no right way to celebrate.

Spend the morning at a pancake breakfast.

Explore the Powwow at The Confluence.

Listen to live music at Prince’s Island Park.

Meet friends for a rooftop drink.

Then finish the night watching fireworks over the city.

It’s one of those days when Calgary feels like it’s outside together.

Planning Ahead?

Canada Day might be the start of July, but the fun doesn’t stop there.

The Calgary Stampede kicks off just two days later, and we’ll be sharing everything from free admission days and pancake breakfasts to the best midway food, concerts and things to do around the city throughout Stampede.
