If you’ve ever strolled down 17th Ave and been lured in by the scent of buttery croissants, you know the heartbreak we’re feeling right now. Black Sheep, the French-inspired bakery that’s been serving up some of the city’s most Instagram-worthy pastries since 2019, has closed — and with no warning.
Locals first noticed the change late last week when a notice appeared on the door at the bakery’s 140-815 17th Ave SW location. The sign, issued by the landlord, cited “unpaid rent” and confirmed the lease had been terminated as of August 29, 2025.
Adding to the shock, their stall at the Calgary Farmers’ Market West has also been cleared out, leaving loyal fans wondering if this is the end of the company altogether.
For six years, Black Sheep has been a go-to for Calgarians craving Parisian vibes — think chausson aux pommes, croissants in unique flavours like raspberry, blueberry lavender, pear vanilla, and mango coconut, plus canelés, Parisian flans, and a pastry case that made every visit feel like a trip to France.
Whether you were a weekend regular or just stopped by for an afternoon pick-me-up, this one stings. And while there’s no word yet on whether Black Sheep might make a comeback, we’ll be keeping a close eye for any updates.
