Outdoor Movie Night Is Back in East Village — And It’s Better Than Ever

Here’s your Tuesday night plan: Blanket. Snacks. A warm summer night.
And two crowd-favourite films playing back-to-back on a hillside in the middle of the Bow.

Movie on The Rise is back on August 20, and if you haven’t been yet — this is the one to catch.

Held at The Rise — a massive natural amphitheatre on St. Patrick’s Island — this free outdoor movie night feels more like a scene from a movie than a screening of one. You’ll find people rolled up in sleeping bags, kids chasing bubbles before sunset, couples leaning into each other on lawn chairs, and a skyline that fully shows off once the lights go down.

Here’s the lineup:
Shrek – 6:30 PM
The Mummy – 9:00 PM
Pre-show kicks off at 5:30 PM

It’s the kind of event that works whether you’re planning a low-key weeknight hang or just looking for an excuse to be outside with a few hundred other Calgarians doing the same.

What to Bring

  • Friends, family, dogs, neighbours — all welcome

  • Blankets, sleeping bags, snuggies, even a tarp (the ground can be damp)

  • Layers. Always layers. It’s Calgary.

  • Snacks and non-alcoholic drinks (or hit up East Village eats beforehand)

Getting There

St. Patrick’s Island is easy to access on foot or bike via the George C. King Bridge. If you’re driving, try the west zoo lot or surface parking in East Village. Scooters welcome too — just don’t block the pathways.
