Calgary’s coffee scene has a new arrival from the West Coast.
Prado Coffee has officially opened its first Calgary location, taking over a spot in Britannia Plaza and marking the Vancouver-born coffee brand’s first move into Alberta.
If you know Vancouver coffee, you probably know Prado. The neighbourhood cafe has built a loyal following for its specialty coffee, fresh baked goods and welcoming spaces, with locations across Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey.
Now, Calgary gets its turn.

From Commercial Drive To Calgary
Prado started with a single cafe on Vancouver’s Commercial Drive, led by longtime coffee pro Sammy Piccolo.
And Piccolo knows coffee.
He has spent nearly three decades in the industry, is a four-time Canadian Barista Champion, was the first World Latte Art Champion and has placed in the top three at the World Barista Championships three times.
Piccolo took over Prado in 2012 and has since grown it into a collection of neighbourhood cafes, including locations on Commercial Drive, Fraser Street, Dunbar, Hastings Street and near Granville Island.
Despite the growth, the idea behind Prado has stayed pretty simple: really good coffee, fresh baking and cafes that feel connected to the neighbourhoods they call home.
Why Britannia Makes Sense
For its first Calgary outpost, Prado landed in Britannia Plaza, a southwest pocket that has become a destination for some of the city’s best food, coffee and independent shops.
It also fits Prado’s neighbourhood-first approach. Many of its B.C. cafes are tucked into established communities where locals can stop in for a morning espresso, meet a friend or settle in with a coffee for the afternoon.
The Britannia cafe is Prado’s ninth location and its first outside British Columbia.
