Alberta’s Real-Life Griswold House Is Lighting Up Again and It Is Holiday Chaos in the Best Way

If you love a good Christmas lights tour and you quote National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation all December long, there is a spot in Alberta that absolutely lives up to the hype. The iconic real-life Griswold House in Stony Plain is gearing up to glow again for the season and it is as bright, quirky, and over-the-top as ever.

This one is a bit out of the way for Calgarians who are doing a quick night out. But if you are planning to be in the Stony Plain or Edmonton area this winter, this holiday display is a must-see to check off your Christmas lights list.

What Is the Griswold House in Alberta

For nearly a decade, Stony Plain resident Jon Harringa has transformed his home into a movie-level tribute to the Griswold house from the Chevy Chase classic. What started about 10 years ago as a friendly decorating rivalry with his neighbors slowly escalated until Jon went all in and recreated the full Clark Griswold experience.

Now the home is one of the most famous Christmas displays in Alberta. Visitors drive in from Edmonton, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, and even hours away just to see it in person.

What You Will See

The commitment is unreal. Expect:

  • Tens of thousands of lights covering the house from top to bottom

  • A totally decked out RV parked outside

  • Santa on the roof

  • Reindeer, characters, and themed props throughout the yard

  • And yes, the beloved Cousin Eddie figure in the classic robe

The homeowner even tracked down a station wagon similar to the original Griswold family car and parks it out front for the full effect. Every year gets a small makeover, so returning visitors can spot a few new details.

The Whole Crescent Joins In

Briarwood Point does not just have one festive house. The entire crescent now decorates heavily and the street has become a full holiday destination. Many of the neighbors have their own displays with synchronized lights, themed decor, and fun little surprises as you walk or drive through.

The vibe is cheerful, family-friendly, and full of that nostalgic small-town Christmas magic.

A Community Favourite With Heart

The Griswold House is free to visit and often includes an optional drop-off for the Parkland Food Bank. Over the years, visitors have donated thousands of items while taking in the display.

What makes it special is the heart behind it. Jon decorates because his wife loves Christmas and because it brings joy to the community they adore.

When You Can See It

The lights are set to flick on for the season starting November 22. The house runs on a timer, so it lights up automatically at dusk and stays bright for several hours each evening.

It is walk-up and drive-by friendly, but weeknights are the best option if you want fewer crowds.

If You Go

  • Location: Briarwood Point, Stony Plain, Alberta

  • Cost: Free

  • Good to bring: A non-perishable donation for the local food bank

  • Perfect for: Christmas lights lovers, holiday movie fans, families, date nights, and anyone craving pure festive serotonin

It is about a 6 hour round trip from Calgary, so make it part of a weekend getaway or a northbound holiday adventure. Pair it with a visit to Edmonton’s Christmas markets or a winter night out and it becomes a full festive experience.

The Bottom Line

The real-life Griswold House is one of Alberta’s most iconic holiday displays. It is bright, it is ridiculous, it is joyful, and it will absolutely put you in the Christmas spirit. If you’re heading toward the Stony Plain area this holiday season, add it to your list.
