Each October, Earth passes through debris left behind by Halley’s Comet, creating the Orionids, a bright and reliable meteor shower known for its fast, glowing streaks across the sky. These meteors travel at roughly 66 kilometres per second, often leaving long, luminous trails behind them.
When and Where to Watch in Calgary

Where to look: Face south or southeast, just above the bright orange star Betelgeuse in Orion’s shoulder

Where to go: The darker the better. Try Big Hill Springs, Kananaskis, or even the higher areas of Nose Hill Park for minimal light pollution

What to Expect
From a dark viewing spot, you could see up to 20 meteors per hour. They’ll appear fast and bright, often leaving glowing trails that hang in the sky for a second or two. You might also spot a few slower Taurid meteors or random “sporadics.”
Bring a reclining chair or blanket, dress warm, and give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adjust to the dark before settling in.
