What a weekend, Calgary! Not only did Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band rock the Saddledome for the first time in over 20 years, but they also made a pit stop at the National Music Centre (NMC) to drop some game-changing news. Let’s just say, this wasn’t your average concert weekend.
Before The Boss took the stage, E Street Band icons Steven Van Zandt and Garry Tallent headed to the historic King Eddy to announce a major international partnership. Yep, Calgary’s NMC is teaming up with the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music (BSACAM) and Van Zandt’s TeachRock program to take music education and cultural exchange to the next level.

A Cross-Border Collaboration
This partnership is a big deal. It’s the NMC’s first-ever international collaboration and promises to highlight how Canadian and American music have shaped each other over the years. From legendary names like Joni Mitchell and The Band to the unmistakable influence of Springsteen, this is about celebrating shared histories and fostering deeper cultural connections.
As NMC CEO Andrew Mosker put it: “This partnership will allow us to showcase the connections between Canadian and American music, emphasizing how artists on both sides of the border have inspired each other and, together, shaped the musical landscape.”
And it’s not just talk—there are big plans already in the works. Think symposiums, artist panels, and even a travelling exhibition starting in 2026. The collaboration aims to give both Canadian and American artists a platform to explore their creative processes and inspire new projects that reflect our shared musical heritage.
TeachRock Comes to Canada
Van Zandt’s TeachRock program is also getting a spotlight in this partnership. If you’re not familiar, TeachRock has been bringing free music-focused resources to classrooms worldwide for 15 years. It’s all about using music to inspire students, keep them engaged, and make learning a little more fun.
“The American government decided that arts were no longer important in schools,” Van Zandt said during the event. “Art is not a luxury. Art is an essential part of the quality of life.”
With this partnership, TeachRock will now include Canadian content, connecting students on both sides of the border through the power of music.
Why Calgary?
So, why is all this happening here in Calgary? Simple: the NMC has been killing it as a hub for music and culture since it opened in 2016. This collaboration just takes things to a whole new level. According to BSACAM Executive Director Robert Santelli, this is their first international partnership—and one they see as incredibly meaningful.
“Through this partnership, we’ll create experiences that deepen our understanding of how these two vibrant music scenes have influenced each other and continue to resonate with audiences worldwide,” Santelli said.
What’s Next?
The plans for this collaboration are already sounding amazing. There’s a one-day symposium called Echoes Across the Border coming in 2025, and a co-developed travelling exhibition set to launch in 2026. But that’s just the start. The NMC and BSACAM are in this for the long haul, with more workshops, exhibitions, and public programs sure to follow.
Between this big announcement and Springsteen’s unforgettable show at the Saddledome, it’s safe to say Calgary had a weekend for the books. And honestly, we’re just getting started.
