The Starbucks at Britannia Plaza (814 49 Ave SW) closed its doors this past weekend. It was one of several stores across North America to shut down as part of the company’s larger downsizing, which also included four closures in Edmonton.
While the international chain is moving out, the neighbourhood already has a fresh option for coffee. Monogram Coffee opened its new flagship at the end of August just down the street at 802 49 Ave SW. The space is bigger, brighter, and comes with an in-house bakery and kitchen that make it much more than a coffee stop.

So although Starbucks has left Britannia, the community has gained something new. Local cafés continue to thrive in Calgary, and Monogram’s latest opening is proof that the city’s independent coffee scene is only getting stronger.
